Employment History

Platform Engineer - BJSS - Nottingham

Date: Mar 2019 - June 2020

Working within a government agency as a platform engineer, during a CI phase of a project.

My current project involves managing a large cloud infrastructure, ensuring a reliable pipeline for software development and deployment. This project is hosted in AWS, is deployed though terraform/puppet with the pipeline managed though Jenkins

Key Accomplishments

  • Built a new development environment for PHP software devs, replacing a 4 year-old legacy setup with a new docker environment. This took onboarding new staff from weeks, to hours.
  • Replaced a complex HAProxy/Consul setup at the core of the architecture with a single ALB - improving visibility into key metrics while reducing architectural complexity
  • Migration of many server node-types from RH to Amazon Linux, reducing cost in licensing, and allowing the move to AWS Spot instances.
  • Removing large sections of legacy code from our pipelines, helping to reduce runtime by 50%
  • Spoke at AWS Nottingham with a talk ‘How I turn a computer on’, covering Packer, Puppet and TF, going from nothing to a deployed web server.
